Beauty in Thomas Reid

The subject of this article is to examine Thomas Reid’s thoughts on beauty, including the concept of beauty during his time. The concept of beauty, which occupies a place as an aesthetic value in the history of philosophy, and views on its nature were based more on metaphysics and cosmology in ancient and medieval philosophy. However, particularly in the 18th century, concepts such as taste and grandeur became influential in the development of aesthetic theories, and the subject was broadly designed in connection with these principles. Questions about what beauty is gained momentum, particularly in the 18th century. One of the most notable of these questions is the relationship between beauty and the sense of taste. Reid also explained his thoughts on beauty through his theory of internal sensation, based on the sense of taste. Reid pursued the beauties that we call beautiful when we see them, that create feelings and emotions of appreciation in us, and was interested in why we call them all beautiful. According to him, all objects that we call beautiful must have a common relationship with us or with something else. This leads us to give them the same name. What is common to everything we call beautiful, and the reason we call them beautiful, is that they create a pleasant feeling or emotion that is believed to be perfect in the mind. Beauty is also the object of mental power. According to Reid, while the sense of beauty is divided into instinctive and rational, beauty itself can be divided into original and derived. The beauty of objects we instinctively like is derived beauty, while original beauty is the object of rational judgments of beauty. With the existence of all beauty, we believe in God's existence and perfection. Because God is the source of all beauty. However, due to our ignorance, we cannot fully perceive all beauty. In this regard, the purpose of this article is to clearly explain Reid's ideas about beauty. This article concludes that Reid’s explanations are reasonable in supporting belief in God’s existence and that the mind provides a basis for humans to perceive things as beautiful. Furthermore, it is concluded that Reid’s explanations regarding beauty leading humans to a better state are successfully and consistently constructed.

Bu makalenin konusu, Thomas Reid’in güzellikle ilgili düşüncelerini yaşadığı dönemin güzellik anlayışlarını da dâhil ederek incelemektir. Felsefe tarihinde estetik bir değer olarak yer alan güzellik kavramı ve onun doğası ile ilgili görüşler, Antik ve Orta Çağ felsefesinde daha çok metafiziğe ve kozmolojiye dayandırılmışken özellikle 18. yüzyılda, tat, yücelik gibi kavramlar estetik teorilerinin gelişmesinde etkili olmuş ve konusu geniş bir şekilde bu ilkelerle bağlantılı olarak tasarlanmıştır. Özellikle 18. yüzyılda güzelliğin ne olduğu hakkındaki sorular hareketlilik kazanmıştır. Bu sorular arasında en dikkat çekenlerden biri, güzelliğin tatma duyusuyla olan ilişkisidir. Reid de güzellik ile ilgili düşüncelerini tatma duyusundan hareketle içsel duyu teorisi üzerinden açıklamıştır. Reid, gördüğümüzde güzel olarak adlandırdığımız, bizde beğeni hissi ve duygusu oluşturan güzelliklerin peşine düşmüş, onların neden hepsini güzel olarak adlandırdığımızla ilgilenmiştir. Tüm güzelliklerin varlığıyla ise Tanrı’nın varlığına ve mükemmel olduğuna inanırız. Çünkü tüm güzelliğin kaynağı Tanrı’dır. Ancak biz güzelliklerin tümünü bilgisizliğimiz yüzünden tam olarak algılayamayız. Bu bakımdan bu makalenin amacı, Reid’in güzellikle ilgili fikirlerini anlaşılır bir şekilde açıklamaktır. Bu makalede, Reid’in söz konusu açıklamalarının Tanrı’nın varlığına duyulan inancı desteklemek için makul olduğuna ve zihnin, güzelliği insanın onları güzel olarak algılaması için bir dayanak oluşturduğuna ulaşılmıştır. Bunun yanında Reid’in, güzelliğin insanı daha iyiye ulaştırdığına ilişkin açıklamalarının başarılı ve tutarlı bir şekilde oluşturulduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.
