On the Trail of a Monk in the Eleventh Century: Christodoulos of Patmos and the Turks

Abstract

Christodoulos, known as the founder of the monastery of Patmos in Greece was born in Niceia in Bithynia in 1020 (d. 1093). During the dangerous and turbulent period of the Byzantine Empire, he served in Palestine, on Mount Latros, on the island of Kos and Patmos. Saint Christodoulos of Patmos founded the the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, founded in 1088 with the support of Emperor Alexios I Komnenos (1081-1118), who donated the island of Patmos. First Christoudoulos was attacked by the Turks and survived the Turks’ attacks in Jerusalem, then in Latros, Strobilos, on the island of Kos and on the island of Patmos. He wrote his work called Hypotyposis in 1091. The text of Hypotyposis contains important information about both the life of Saint Christodoulos and the Turks. Unfortunately, this text has not been the subject of a detailed study. The information given by Christodoulos after escaping from Jerusalem is very valuable not only for the history of the Eastern Mediterranean, but also for the history of Southwest Anatolia and Turk. In this article will be study both the life of Christodoulos and the informations he gave about the Turks.

On Birinci Yüzyılda Bir Keşişin İzinden: Patmoslu Christodoulos ve Türkler

Abstract

Yunanistan’daki Patmos Manastırının kurucusu olarak bilinen Christodoulos, Bithynia bölgesindeki Nikeia’da 1020 (ö. 1093) yılında doğdu. Bizans İmparatorluğu’nun tehlikeli ve çalkantılı bir döneminde Filistin’de, Latros Dağı’nda, Kos Adası’nda ve Patmos’ta görev yaptı. Patmoslu Christodoulos son olarak 1088 yılında Bizans İmparatoru I. Aleksios Komnenos (1081-1118) tarafından kendisine bağış olarak verilen Patmos Adası’nda Aziz Theologos/Yuhanna Manastırını kurdu. Christodoulos ilk başta Kudüs’te sonra Latros, Strobilos, Kos Adası ve Patmos Adası’nda Türk saldırılarına uğradı ve bu saldırılardan kurtuldu. 1091’de Hypotyposis adlı çalışmasını yazdı. Grekçe yazılan Hypotyposis metni hem Türkler hem de Aziz Christodoulos’un hayatı hakkında önemli bilgiler içermektedir. Ne yazık ki bu metin ülkemizde detaylı bir çalışmanın konusu olmamıştır. Selçuklu Türkleri’nin saldırısı sonrasında Kudüs’ten kaçtıktan sonra Christodoulos’un vermiş olduğu bilgiler, sadece Doğu Akdeniz tarihi için değil hem Güneybatı Anadolu hem de Türk tarihi açısından oldukça kıymetlidir. Bu makalede, hem Christodoulos’un hayatı hem de Türkler hakkında vermiş olduğu bilgiler Güneybatı Anadolu özelinde incelenecektir.
