Skolastik Metafiziğin Zirvesinde: Duns Scotus’un Teslis Yaklaşımı ve İlahi Töz Problemi

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Hıristiyan Teslis doktrininin merkezî problemlerinden biri olan Tanrı’da birlik ve çokluk arasındaki ilişkinin, Orta çağ Fransisken düşünürü John Duns Scotus’un metafizik ve semantik yaklaşımı çerçevesinde nasıl temellendirildiğini incelemektedir. Hıristiyan düşünce tarihinde modalizm, Baba, Oğul ve Kutsal Ruh arasındaki ayrımları yalnızca görünüş düzeyine indirgerken, triteizm ilahi gerçekliği üç ayrı cevhere bölme eğilimi göstermiştir. Bu iki uç yaklaşımın ortaya çıkardığı teolojik ve metafizik sorunlar, Teslis öğretisinin anlaşılması açısından önemli tartışmalara yol açmıştır. Scotus, söz konusu yaklaşımlar arasında bir denge kurarak ilahi özün birliğini muhafaza etmeye çalışmış, aynı zamanda kişilere ilişkin ayrımları gerçek fakat özsel olmayan ilişkisel farklılıklar olarak açıklamıştır. Bu bağlamda çalışma, öncelikle Teslis doktrinine ilişkin tarihsel ve kavramsal arka planı ele almakta, ardından Scotus’un formel ayrım (distinctio formalis), ortak doğa (natura communis) ve bireyleşme (haecceitas) kavramlarını Teslis bağlamında değerlendirmektedir. Ayrıca Scotus’un dil ve anlam anlayışının, Teslis’e ilişkin teolojik önermelerin anlamlılığı, tutarlılığı ve kavramsal açıklığının sağlanmasındaki rolü incelenmektedir. Araştırmada nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden doküman incelemesi kullanılmış; Scotus’un temel eserleri ile konuya ilişkin klasik ve çağdaş çalışmalar karşılaştırmalı bir yaklaşımla analiz edilmiştir. Sonuç olarak Scotus’un metafizik ve semantik çerçevesinin, Tanrı’da birlik ve çokluk problemini açıklamada özgün bir yaklaşım sunduğu, Teslis doktrinine ilişkin tartışmalara sistematik bir katkı sağladığı ve çağdaş analitik teoloji ile felsefi teoloji alanlarında yürütülen tartışmalar açısından önemli kavramsal imkânlar barındırdığı ortaya konulmaktadır.

At the Pinnacle of Scholastic Metaphysics: Duns Scotus’ Approach to the Trinity and the Problem of Divine Substance

Abstract

This study examines how the relationship between unity and plurality in God, one of the central problems of the Christian doctrine of the Trinity, is grounded within the metaphysical and semantic framework of the medieval Franciscan thinker John Duns Scotus. Throughout the history of Christian thought, modalism reduced the distinctions among the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit to mere appearances, whereas tritheism tended to divide divine reality into three distinct substances. The theological and metaphysical difficulties arising from these opposing positions have long constituted a major challenge for Trinitarian theology. Seeking a middle position, Scotus aimed to preserve the unity of the divine essence while explaining the distinctions among the divine persons as real but non-essential relational differences. In this context, the study first addresses the historical and conceptual background of Trinitarian debates and then evaluates Scotus’s notions of formal distinction (distinctio formalis), common nature (natura communis), and individuation (haecceitas) in relation to the doctrine of the Trinity. Particular attention is given to Scotus’s theory of language and meaning and its role in ensuring the intelligibility, coherence, and conceptual clarity of theological propositions concerning the Trinity. Employing a qualitative methodology based on document analysis, the study comparatively examines Scotus’s primary texts together with classical and contemporary scholarship. It concludes that Scotus’s metaphysical and semantic framework provides an original account of the problem of unity and plurality in God, contributes systematically to Trinitarian theology, and offers significant conceptual resources for contemporary discussions in analytic theology and philosophical theology.
