Examining the Impact of 'No Entry Without a Female Companion' (NEWFC) Policy on Young Male Consumers: Self-determination Needs, In-group Tendency, Social Conformity, and Well-being
Abstract
This study investigates the psychological effects of “no entry without a female companion” (NEWFC) policies in Turkish entertainment venues. Focusing on 490 young male consumers, it examines how such discriminatory practices undermine self-esteem, autonomy, and well-being. Findings reveal that NEWFC policies foster exclusion, frustration, and diminished self-worth, while also compromising individuals’ sense of belonging. In response, participants adopt coping strategies, such as seeking alternative venues or conforming to social norms. Using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with SmartPLS, this research highlights overlooked male experiences of exclusion, emphasizing the need to challenge discriminatory policies and promote inclusivity in public spaces.
