The Analysis of the Sea Trade of the UK-Flagged Ships between the Mediterranean and Istanbul [1821-28]
Abstract
This article analyzed the commercial voyages and goods carried by British-flagged ships from the Mediterranean ports to Istanbul and from Istanbul to the Mediterranean ports, whose commercial activities in the Levant and the Mediterranean gained volume and momentum in the early 19th century. Another secondary purpose is to provide researchers with an organized data set from a voluminous archival source. The fundamental question of the study can be formulated as to what the voyages of the British-flagged ships on the Istanbul-Mediterranean mutual route looked like and what the goods they carried on these voyages were. To achieve this goal and solve the question, the voyages of 409 ships navigating between İstanbul and Mediterranean ports and the assortment and the quantities of the goods they carried were studied and interpreted. The original data on these voyages and the articles of trade carried in these voyages were included in the archival book of Sefine efteri, classified as BOA. DVN. DVE. d. 37/3 and preserved in the Presidential Ottoman Archive of İstanbul. The probable result to be obtained from the study is that the British ships centered in Istanbul carried out transportation on five types of voyages. The goods they received from Istanbul usually consisted of raw materials. In contrast, the goods they brought to Istanbul consisted partly of finished goods and those needed within the Ottoman Empire. It should be noted that the results obtained from the study, due to time and region limitations, do not allow making generalizations and thus should be regarded as a sample.

Akdeniz İskeleleri ve İstanbul Arasında İngiltere Bandıralı Gemilerin Deniz Ticaretinin Analizi [1821-28]
Abstract
Bu makale XIX. yüzyılın başlarında Levant ve Akdeniz’de ticari faaliyetleri hacim ve hız kazanan İngiltere bandıralı gemilerin Akdeniz iskelelerinden İstanbul’a ve İstanbul’dan Akdeniz iskelelerine doğru ticari seferlerini ve taşıdıkları malları analiz etmek amacıyla kaleme alınmıştır. İkincil nitelikli bir başka amaç, hacimli bir arşiv defterinin verilerini araştırmacıların kullanımına sunarak onlara düzenlenmiş bir veri seti temin etmektir. Çalışmanın temel sorusu, İstanbul-Akdeniz karşılıklı ticaretinde İngiliz bandıralı gemilerin seferleri ve bu seferlerde taşıdıkları mallar nelerdi şeklinde formüle edilebilir. Söz konusu amaca ulaşmak ve soruyu çözmek için Cumhurbaşkanlığı Osmanlı arşivinde bulunan BOA. DVN. DVE. d. 037/3 (Cumhurbaşkanlığı Osmanlı Arşivi, Divan-ı Hümayun, Düveli Ecnebiyye Defteri) kodlu 95 sayfalık bir izni sefine defterinde yer alan 409 adet geminin seferleri ve bu seferlerde taşıdıkları malların neler olduğu ve bu malların miktarları tespit edilerek yorumlanmıştır. Çalışmadan elde edilmesi umulan muhtemel sonuç, İngiliz bandırası taşıyan gemilerin İstanbul merkezli olarak beş sefer türünde taşımacılık yaptığı, İstanbul’dan aldıkları malların genellikle ham maddeler oluştuğu, İstanbul’a getirdikleri malların ise kısmen mamul mallardan ve Osmanlı’da üretimi az olan mallardan meydana geldiğidir. Çalışmadan elde sonuçların zaman ve bölge sınırlılığı nedeniyle bir örneklem olduğu ve genelleme yapmaya imkân tanımadığını belirtmek gerekir.
