Serbest çevirmenlerin Türkiye çeviri sektöründe yaşadığı zorluklar

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı serbest çevirmenlerin Türkiye çeviri sektöründe yaşadığı temel sorunları ortaya koymaktır. Çalışma yalnızca teknik çeviri yapan serbest çevirmenlere odaklanmaktadır. Çevirmenlerin hem çeviri sürecinde hem de çeviri sektörü içinde karşılaştığı sorunlar iki yönlü ele alınacaktır. Sosyolojik yaklaşımların çeviribilim alanına dâhil edilmesiyle, çevirmenleri konu alan çalışmalar artsa da yapılan yazın taramasında serbest çevirmenlerin bu tartışmaların gerisinde kaldığı ortaya çıkmıştır. Özellikle, teknik çeviri yapan serbest çevirmenlerle ilgili çalışmalar oldukça sınırlıdır. Serbest çevirmenleri görünür kılmak ve çeviri sektörünün ana sorunlarına çevirmenlerin gözünden bakmak çeviribilime de katkı sağlayacaktır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda, çevirmenlerin çalışma koşulları, konumları, ücret politikaları, alanı çekici kılan unsurlar ve buradaki baskın güçler irdelenerek alana genel bir bakış sağlanacaktır. İnceleme Pierre Bourdieu’nün habitus, sermaye ve illusio (çıkar) gibi temel kavramları kullanılarak yapılacaktır. Tümü birbiriyle ilişkili olan bu kavramlar araştırmacıya hem sosyolojik bir bakış açısı hem de derinlemesine bir analiz imkânı tanımaktadır. Araştırmada farklı şirketlerde teknik çeviri yapan 18 serbest çevirmenle e-posta aracılığıyla bir anket çalışması yürütülmüştür. Hazırlanan anket kapalı, yarı kapalı ve açık uçlu sorulardan oluşmaktadır. Anket çalışmasından elde edilen veriler güçlü kültürel sermayelerine karşın teknik çeviri yapan serbest çevirmenlerin düzensiz ve düşük ücretlerle, sosyal haklardan yoksun, aşırı iş yüküyle ve mesleki itibar görmeden çalıştıklarını ortaya koymuştur. Ayrıca teknik çevirilerde sıklıkla kullanılan makine çevirisi çevirmenlerin bir kısmı tarafından mesleki açıdan bir tehdit olarak algılamaktadır. Sonuç olarak, serbest çevirmenleri ve çeviri sektöründe yaşanan sorunları anlamak için daha fazla ampirik çalışmaya ihtiyaç duyulmaktadır.

The ıssues freelance translators face on the Turkish translation market

Abstract

The aim of this study is to reveal the basic issues of freelance translators on the Turkish translation market. The study focuses merely on freelance technical translators. The issues experienced by freelancers both in the translation process and in the translation market will be presented from a two-sided perspective. With the inclusion of sociological approaches in translation studies, even though there is now an increasing volume of research on translators, it is clear from the literature review that freelance translators lag behind these debates. In particular, the studies on freelance technical translators are quite limited. Making freelance translators visible and looking at the main issues of translation market through the eyes of them will also make a valuable contribution to translation studies. In line with this purpose, an overview of the field will be provided by examining the working conditions of translators, their positions, the payment policies, the factors that make the field attractive and dominant powers here. The analysis will be carried out by using Pierre Bourdieu’s basic concepts such as habitus, capital and illusio (interest). These concepts, all of which are interrelated, provide the researcher with both a sociological perspective and an opportunity for an in-depth analysis. In the research, an e-mail survey was conducted with 18 freelance translators who translate technical texts in different companies. The questionnaire consists of closed, semi-closed and open-ended questions. Data obtained from the survey show that despite their strong cultural capital, freelance technical translators work without social rights or professional reputation, with excessive workload and irregular, low payments. Furthermore, some translators consider machine translation used frequently in technical translations as a threat to the future of the translation profession. Consequently, more empirical research is needed to understand freelance translators and the issues on translation market.
