PORSELEN BİBLOLARIN DEKORATİF NESNEDEN ELEŞTİREL ANLATI ARACINA DÖNÜŞÜMÜ

Abstract

THE TRANSFORMATION OF PORCELAIN FIGURINES FROM DECORATIVE OBJECTS TO TOOLS OF CRITICAL NARRATIVE

Year 2025, Issue: 53, 780 - 797, 30.11.2025

Abstract

Porcelain figurines have long been a significant component of material culture as decorative objects. Typically used to adorn interior spaces due to their aesthetic and delicate qualities, these items have historically served as indicators of social status and taste. However, the interdisciplinary and conceptual approach of contemporary art has recontextualized porcelain figurines, transforming them into powerful tools of artistic expression that transcend their traditional meanings.
This study explores the transformation of porcelain figurines from mere decorative items into mediums of critical narrative, examining how contemporary artists reinterpret these objects. By associating figurines with themes such as nostalgia, identity, consumer culture, and mass production, they evolve beyond their ornamental function to become artworks that engage in social critique and storytelling.
Notably, artists such as Penny Byrne, Barnaby Barford, and Andrew Livingstone manipulate porcelain figures not only to imbue them with critical and political meaning but also to challenge their conventional perception as purely decorative objects. This article analyzes how porcelain figurines have been reshaped through narrative power and interdisciplinary interaction within various platforms of contemporary art.
