EVALUATION OF PATIENT KNOWLEDGE LEVEL AND PERCEPTIONS REGARDING MRI AND CT IMAGING METHODS: A CROSS-SECTIONAL SURVEY STUDY

Abstract

This study evaluated patients' knowledge of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) imaging, their attitudes toward radiation risks, and their perceptions of information and informed consent processes. This cross-sectional study included 347 participants, and data collected through a questionnaire were analyzed using chi-square tests. Higher education level and younger age were associated with more accurate knowledge of MRI and CT principles (p < 0.05). Individuals knowledgeable about radiation reported more anxiety during CT examinations (p < 0.001), but also showed a stronger belief in the necessity of these procedures. Most participants found the information provided before the examinations insufficient. Among participants with previous negative experiences, 63.84% reported that having sufficient information was important for making decisions regarding the examination (p = 0.007). The findings suggest that radiation awareness and positive examination experiences increase patients' trust and participation in diagnostic processes. Improving communication and informed consent practices can strengthen patients' understanding, satisfaction, and participation in healthcare decision-making.
