Comparasion of Scent Quality of Organic and Conventional Oil-Bearing Rose (Rosa Damascena Mill.)

Abstract

Oil-bearing rose (Rosa damascena Mill.) is the most important species, producing a highvalue aromatic oil, which is used in the fragrance and cosmetic industries. The organic oil-bearing rose cultivation has become more important in the recent years. In Göller region of Turkey, 110 kg organic rose oil was produced from organic farming areas in 2009. The aim of this study was to determine the main scent differences between organic and conventional rose oils produced from Baş- Koop in Başmakçı/Afyonkarahisar. Rose oils produced by hydro-distillation were analyzed by GC/MS for essential oil composition. In the conventional production, the composition of the first distillation oil was 25.63% citronellol, 12.07% geraniol, 5.82% nerol and 35.06% paraffins, and the composition of the second distillation oil was 37.05% citronellol, 30.62% geraniol, 14.92% nerol and 0.67% paraffins. In the organic production, the composition of the first distillation oil was 20.47% citronellol, 9.32% geraniol, 4.60% nerol and 48.33% paraffins, and the composition of the second distillation oil was 37.48% citronellol, 30.50% geraniol, 15.54% nerol and 2.80% paraffins. The results of this study showed that the rose oil composition was different in the first distillation oils, but was similar in the second distillation oils between organic and conventional rose oils. Organic rose oils contained less amount of methyl eugenol which has mutagenic and allergic reactions.
