AN ALPHABET PROPOSAL BEFORE THE TURKISH REFORM OF LETTERS: THE WORK ENTITLED AS OUR LETTERS ARE THE SAME AS LATIN IN TERMS OF SCIENTIFIC AND HISTORICAL PRINCIPLES
Abstract
With the adoption of Islam, Turks started to use the Arabic alphabet and it
spread to the land dominated by them. When the Arabic alphabet failed to provide for the sounds in
Turkish language, improvements were done by adding some letters. On the other
hand, Arabic alphabet kept its traditional phonetic and spelling
characteristics until the reformist movements in Turkish literature evolved
into a scientific level in 19th century. Due to the political and
socio-cultural events occurring in the Turkish world in the 19th
century and especially the increasing printing and publication activities in
the second half of the 19th century, arguments on changing the
alphabet rose among the Turkish communities. Parallel to the arguments on the
change of alphabet in the Turkish press, a 40-page booklet was published by
Ömer Tahsin in 1923, five years before the actual transition to the Latin
alphabet. Tahsin Ömer stated in his work that Arabic and Latin letters
originated from the Phoenicus alphabet 3000 years ago and that Phoenicus
alphabet was based on the Egyptian hieroglyph inscription. Ömer provided
comparative tables of those alphabets along with their writing phases. He even created a
new Turkish alphabet based on Latin alphabet, under the subsection titled as
“How to Write in Turkish with Latin Letters?” of his booklet before Latin
alphabet was actually adopted.
Tahsin Ömer’s alphabet proposal is a pioneer after Azerbaijani Ahundzade, yet
it did not attract the deserved attention and was only considered by few who
made research on the language reform. This article aims to analyse Tahsin Ömer’s views on
the change of alphabet by translating his work into current letters. The text
is “Our Letters Are the Same as Latin in Terms of Scientific and Historical
Principles” which is kept in Beyazit State Library with 201119/494.35-1 record
number, not published before, and written in Ottoman letters.
