Algısal Öğrenme Stillerinin Yabancı Dilde Kelime Öğrenmeye ve Hatırlamaya Etkisi

Abstract

ÖZET



Bu araştırma ile lise öğrencilerinin öğrenme
stilleri belirlemek ve öğrenme stillerine göre yapılan öğretimin yabancı dilde
kelime öğrenmeye ve hatırlamaya etkisini incelemek amaçlanmıştır. Araştırma
katılan öğrencilerin algısal öğrenme stillerini (görsel öğrenenler, işitsel
öğrenenler kinestetik/dokunarak öğrenenler) belirlemek üzere 
“Öğrenme Stili Ölçeği (Learning Style Survey
(LSS)” ve kelime bilgisini ölçmek için araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen
“Başarı Testi” kullanılmıştır.
 Ayrıca
katılımcılar tarafından bir açık uçlu soru cevaplanmıştır. 
Araştırmanın çalışma grubu lise 9. Sınıf
öğrencilerinden oluşan toplam 55 öğrenci oluşturmuştur.
 Çalışmaya
55 öğrenci katılmıştır. 
Araştırmada
ortaöğretim öğrencilerin öğrenme stil tercihlerinde birinci sırada görsel,
ikinci sırada işitseller, üçüncü sırada kinestetik/dokunsal öğrenme stili
olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Tercih edilen öğrenme stillerine uygun olarak
belirlenen
 üç yönteme göre her
bir öğretim etkinliğinde 8 kelime öğretilmiştir. Tüm öğretim etkinlikleri
tamamlandıktan hemen sonra, 1-hafta sonra ve 1 ay sonra olmak üzere toplam üç
tane sontest yapılmıştır. Uygulanan başarı testlerinden bir tanesi (Türkçeden
İngilizceye çevirme) kelime öğrenmeyi, diğeri ise (çoktan seçmeli) kelime
hatırlamayı ölçmektedir. Bulgular bize şu sonuçları vermiştir. Tüm son
testlerde öğrencilerin en iyi kelime öğrenme ve hatırlamaları karma öğrenme
yöntemiyle gerçekleşmiştir. Toplamda yabancı dilde kelime öğrenmesi ve
hatırlaması en düşük görsel yönteminin kullanımında gerçekleşmiştir.

The Effect of Perceptual Learning on L2 Vocabulary Learning and Retention

Abstract

It is thought that learning styles have an effect
on learning foreign language. This study aims to determine effects of
perceptual learning styles on L2 vocabulary learning and retention. Learning
style preferences were assessed in the current study through the section of
Cohen et al.’s Learning Style Survey (LSS) corresponding to the perceptual
modalities and achievement tests developed by the researcher was used to assess
vocabulary learning and retention. And an open-ended question is tried to
answered by participants. Study group of this research included 9th classes of
Zile Trade Vocational High School. 55 students participated this study. Results
show that students have mostly visual learning style, then verbal learning
style and kinesthetic/tactile learning style. Each participants completed a
learning style (visual, auditory, kinesthetic/ tactile, mixed) assessment, took
a vocabulary pretest, and then studied 8 words each through three conditions
(most preferred learning style, least preferred learni g style, and mixed
modality). After teaching sessions completed, participants took posttests
immediately, after 1 week, and after 1 month. Two achievement tests implemented
in this study. One of them (translating words form Turkish into English) is
used for to assess vocabulary learning, the other one (multiple choice test),
is used for to assess vocabulary retention. Results show us; students reached
greatest learning and the best retention with mixed modality instruction in all
posttests. Students reached the least gain and retention with visual modality
instruction in all posttests.
