Impression of Safavid Architecture in Early Modern Europe Based on Seventeenth Century Travelogues

Abstract

This study examines the construction, description and contextualization of Safavid ‎architecture in early modern Europe, through seventeenth-century travel accounts. While ‎previous scholarship has often treated travelogues primarily as historical sources, their role ‎in shaping European descriptive vocabularies and interpretive frameworks for non-‎European architecture remains underexplored. Focusing on the narratives of Jean Chardin, ‎Engelbert Kaempfer and Pietro Della Valle, this descriptive-interpretive study employs ‎textual and visual analysis to investigate how Safavid urban spaces, spatial order and ‎ornamental features were conveyed to European readers. ‎ Rather than arguing for direct formal or stylistic influence, the article situates these travel ‎accounts within broader processes of cultural observation and textual mediation. It ‎contends that representations of Isfahan’s urban order, axial planning and architectural ‎richness informed European ways of describing, comparing and conceptualizing ‎architectural differences; without implying a direct transfer of design principles. Particular ‎attention is given to the writings and visual interpretations of Johann Bernhard Fischer von ‎Erlach, whose engagement with Safavid architecture exemplifies an imaginative and ‎historiographical mode of interpretation rather than an assertion of architectural ‎derivation.‎ By reframing travelogues as active agents in the production of architectural knowledge, ‎this article contributes to a more nuanced understanding of early modern transcultural ‎encounters between Iran and Europe, emphasizing perception, representation and ‎discourse as central categories in architectural historiography.
