The Activities of Turkish Aeroplane Association in Sinop (1924-1934)
Abstract
During the period when the War of Independence was completed and a new Turkish state was established, the industrial potential of the country was primitive, limited and not very promising. Especially in the European states that completed the renaissance and reform process, the last stage of the heavy industry that emerged after four centuries of economic develop-ment was the breakthroughs seen in the field of aviation. Mustafa Kemal Pasha, who was aware of this and pointed out to the Turkish youth that the "Future is in the Skies" as a goal of success, pointed out that the people and the state should be prepared against the dangers coming from the sky. In order to ensure the technological development in the field of aviation, which was necessary for the Republic of Turkey to maintain its independ-ence, it was decided to establish a civil society organization on the subject by also providing the support of the public in places where state resources were insufficient, and the Turkish Aeroplane Society, with its center in An-kara, was established on February 16, 1925. Indeed, with the participation of the Turkish society, the society's management began to include dozens of aircraft, which were its raison d'etre. In this context, the Turkish Aeronauti-cal Society expanded its activities throughout the country shortly after its establishment and completed its organizational process. As in the rest of the world, aviation activities in Turkey are organizations that require high budgets, and therefore financial support from different sources was needed. The society made efforts to create resources both as a center and through its branches (games of chance, individual or collective financial donations, col-lection of sacrificial skins, etc.). At this point, the Sinop branch of the so-ciety supported all kinds of activities of the society with the support of its people, provided voluntary participation, and took the lead in almost every field from ticket sales to aircraft purchases. In the study conducted, an effort was made to reveal the perspective of the people of Sinop towards the Turk-ish Aircraft Society, and therefore towards aviation and national defense, through local and national news sources such as newspapers and official and archive sources.
