Abstract
The Purpose of Study: The most important reason for the rapid change and reproduction of the coastal areas of the city is the intensive use of coastal areas. The increasing demand of the people living in the city in line with the use of coastal areas causes physical interventions to the coasts. The research aims to open a discussion on the possibility of designing a public space where the users of the city can interact with the city without disturbing the coastline. In this case, the people living in the city and the city itself will gain new experiences and identity.
Literature Review/Background: The Historic Peninsula is one of the most important mixed sites of Istanbul. When the subject is handled within the framework of the protection of cultural heritage, protection includes the protection of the coastline in line with the principles of holistic protection. Land filling activities in a historic area changes the shape of the existing coastline, thus jeopardizing the overall protection of protected areas. There are different design approaches that protect the existing coastline and also meet spatial needs. One of them is Little Island in New York, which also has a historical reference.
Methods: In the research, data were collected through literature research, field observations and documentation. Scientific publications on the filling areas were examined, the HDPK Little Island was observed on site, and the importance of the issue was discussed from a conservation perspective by making some determinations.
Results: In this study, the Yenikapı meeting area in Istanbul and Little Island, one of the pier parks connected to the Hudson River Park in New York, are examined, the need for public space where people and visitors can interact with the city without disturbing the coastline. It should be an achievement that can be realized without disturbing the shoreline. Suggestions for the designs to be made on the coastline; *Must increase the usability of the coastline with new walking routes, *Give importance to diversity *Make use of the technologies of the current century *It should be perceived as a result of design (it should also be visually aesthetic) *It should respect the coastline and the historical one *It should be enriched with different levels and allow the formation of various landscape points and offer the opportunity to watch the city from different levels.
Conclusions: Land filled activity areas designed with an understanding that meets the criteria mentioned in the findings will be both environmentally friendly and interesting in terms of creating potential that will increase the dynamics of the city. In this case, both the people living in the city and the city itself will have new experiences and a new identity, and as their interaction increases, their belonging will become stronger.
