A review of the geographical indication registration process: the case of Kastamonu

Abstract

Geographical Indications are official quality marks used to secure the origin and production methods of products known to consumers. These products are Geographically Indicated products that are known by the name of a particular place and identified with it. Geographical Indication products are differentiated from each other by their quality as well as their level of recognition and fame. The touristic attraction power of gastronomy, the promotional activities of Turkish Cuisine, and the gastro-millennialist efforts of the cities have carried the concept of geographical indication beyond being an industrial property right. The aim of this study is to reveal the geographical indication registration and the progress of this process. At the same time, the Türkiye Geographical Indication concept and the EU's Geographical Indication concepts are mentioned in the study. The study was conducted with a qualitative research method and Kastamonu province was selected as the sample. The data were obtained from the relevant data sources of the Turkish Patent and European Commission. It was determined that there are 21 gastronomic products with geographical indication belonging to Kastamonu province and only Taşköprü Garlic has an EU registration certificate. As a result of the study, it was determined that there are similarities between the functioning of the Turkish Geographical Indication process and the EU Geographical Indication process.
