One of the disputed issues in the field of Ottoman-Turkish modernization has been designated with the discussion on the rupture and continuity between Ottoman and Republican periods. As a direct inheritor of the Ottoman State, the Turkish Republic carried out radical reforms after 1923 all of which aimed at removing the Ottoman past. Especially from 1930, the new Republic embraced a new ideology (so-called Kemalism) and intended to erase the social and cultural heritage which were transplanted from the Empire. By this purpose when a new historical consideration and conceptualization were launching out, at the same time all schoolbooks and history education were rearranged according to this new approach. This article discusses all this process by analyzing the perception of Namık Kemal during the earlier Republican period. As a pioneer figure throughout the long Ottoman-Turkish modernization history, Namık Kemal maintained his influence after 1923 and especially after the death of Atatürk in 1938 he appeared a significant hinge for a group of intellectual who attempted to link Ottoman past to the present. Namık Kemal became a bridge for this transformation.
