THE COLLAPSE OF THE ETHICS OF CARE IN PILAR QUINTANA’S NOVEL THE BITCH

Abstract

Pilar Quintana (Cali, 1972) is one of the prominent figures of contemporary Colombian literature. In her novel The Bitch (La Perra), published in 2017, she narrates the story of a woman named Damaris while intensely exploring themes such as maternal expectations, infertility, and violence. Studies on the work have predominantly focused on the dimensions of the text through feminist and ecocritical lenses. However, the ethical dimension of the dynamics of compassion, care, and ownership established through the human-animal relationship has often been addressed indirectly. For this reason, within the framework of ethical literary criticism, the novel in question is analyzed in this study in line with Carol Gilligan’s ethics of care theory. In conclusion, the study identifies that in Damaris’s relationship with the dog, care initially serves as a means of establishing a bond and constructing identity; however, when combined with social pressure, poverty, and past traumas, this practice of compassion becomes unsustainable. In this context, it is concluded that the novel provides a striking example depicting the evolution of the ethics of care from an absolute virtue into tragic violence and the subsequent collapse of ethical responsibility.

PILAR QUINTANA’NIN KÖPEK ADLI ROMANINDA BAKIM ETİĞİNİN ÇÖKÜŞÜ

Öz

Pilar Quintana (Cali, 1972) çağdaş Kolombiya edebiyatının öne çıkan isimlerinden biridir. 2017 yılında yayımlanan Köpek (La Perra) başlıklı romanında Damaris adlı bir kadının öyküsünü anlatırken annelik beklentileri, kısırlık ve şiddet gibi temaları yoğun bir şekilde işlemektedir. Eser üzerine yapılan çalışmalar ise metnin feminist veya eko eleştiri bakımından ele alınabilecek boyutları üzerinde yoğunlaşmıştır. Bununla birlikte, romanda insan–hayvan ilişkisi üzerinden kurulan şefkat, bakım ve sahiplik dinamiklerinin etik boyutu çoğu zaman dolaylı biçimde ele alınmıştır. Bu nedenle bu çalışmada söz konusu roman, etik edebiyat eleştirisi çerçevesinde, Carol Gilligan’ın bakım etiği kuramı doğrultusunda incelenmiştir. Sonuç olarak Damaris’in köpekle kurduğu ilişkide bakımın başlangıçta bir bağ kurma ve kimlik inşası aracı olduğu, ancak toplumsal baskı, yoksulluk ve geçmişin travmalarıyla birleştiğinde bu şefkat pratiğinin sürdürülemez hâle geldiği saptanmıştır. Bu bağlamda romanın bakım etiğinin mutlak bir erdem olmaktan çıkıp trajik bir şiddete evrilmesini ve etik sorumluluğun çöküşünü gösteren sarsıcı bir örnek sunduğu sonucuna varılmıştır.
