Abstract
The aim of this article is to analyze and discuss a topic, which does not stand at the forefront. The study tries to show that the European Union ever since its formation on the one hand has been attaching importance to the equality principle and trying to realize equality among its members, but on the other hand has been working against this principle by giving the example of the Union’s language policy. The European Union on the one hand gives importance to the multilingualism and has 23 official languages, on the other hand in the working environment and the access to information, the weight of English, French and German can be felt, in many fields it can be even said that English is dominant. The article analyses the historical process and official structure of language policy, the costs and benefits of multilingualism, the application and major problems of the language policy, the dominance of English, the advantages and disadvantages of a lingua franca and the search for solutions for the European Union’s language problem.

Abstract
Bu çalışmanın amacı, genelde ön planda olmayan bir konuyu incelemek ve tartışmaya
sunmaktır. Çalışmada, Avrupa Birliği’nin kuruluşundan bu yana eşitlik ilkesine önem
vermesine ve üyeleri arasında eşitliği gerçekleştirme çabasına rağmen eşitlik ilkesine
aykırı hareket etmesi Birliğin dil politikası örneği ile anlatılmaya çalışılacaktır. 23 resmi
dile sahip olan Avrupa Birliği bir taraftan çok dilliliğe önem vermekte, öte yandan çalışma
ortamında ve bilgi erişiminde İngilizce, Fransızca ve Almancanın ağırlığı hissedilmekte,
hatta birçok alanda İngilizcenin baskınlığından dahi bahsedilebilmektedir. Çalışmada,
dil politikasının tarihsel süreci ve resmi altyapısı, çok dilliliğin maliyeti ve faydaları, dil
politikasının uygulanması ve temel sorunları, İngilizcenin baskınlığı, tek ortak dil seçeneğinin
olumlu ve olumsuz yönleri ve Avrupa Birliği’nin dil sorununa çözüm çabaları anlatılacaktır.
