The Relationship Between Loneliness Level and Death Anxiety in Older Adults and Successful Aging
Abstract
This research was conducted in order to determine the relationship between loneliness level and death anxiety in older adults and its effect on successful aging. The sample in this descriptive, cross-sectional, correlational research consisted of 235 older adults. The data were collected using an information form, the Loneliness Scale for Older Adults, the Death Anxiety Scale, and the Successful Aging Scale. Analyses were performed using Student’s t-test, One-Way ANOVA, the Mann Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis tests, Pearson correlation analysis, and Linear regression analysis. The mean age of the older adults included in the research was 71.88±4.37 years, 51.9% were women, and 89.4% were married. The participants’ mean Loneliness Scale for Older Adults score was 12.17±6.96, their mean Death Anxiety Scale score was 40.08±16.37, and their mean Successful Aging Score was 52.30±6.96. Negative correlations were determined between loneliness levels and successful aging, and between death anxiety levels and successful aging. Older adults experienced an acceptable level of loneliness, this being highest in social relationships. They also experienced a moderate level of death anxiety, and their successful aging scores were above average.
