DURATION ESTIMATION IN ERP PROJECTS: A PROBABILITY-BASED APPROACH WITH MONTE CARLO SIMULATION AND PERT METHOD

Abstract

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) projects involve numerous interdependent activities, uncertain duration estimates and substantial cost and schedule risks, making accurate time planning a critical challenge. This study proposes a probability-based approach for estimating the completion time of an ERP implementation project by jointly employing Monte Carlo simulation and the Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT). First, a detailed work breakdown structure for the ERP implementation was constructed, and optimistic, pessimistic and most likely duration estimates for each activity were obtained from experts. These activity times were then modelled under uniform, triangular and normal probability distributions and analysed using Monte Carlo simulation. The simulation results indicate that the mean project duration is approximately 624 days under the uniform distribution, 614 days under the triangular distribution and 609 days under the normal distribution, demonstrating that the choice of distribution has a significant impact on project duration estimates. Based on the PERT analysis, the expected project completion time was found to be around 605 days, with a 95% confidence interval of roughly 586–624 days. The calculated project duration changes when activity durations are determined according to different distributions. This highlights the importance of accounting for the distribution of durations when calculating ERP project durations.

ERP PROJELERİNDE SÜRE TAHMİNİ: MONTE CARLO SİMÜLASYONU VE PERT YÖNTEMİ İLE OLASILIK TABANLI BİR YAKLAŞIM

Abstract

Kurumsal Kaynak Planlama (Enterprise Resource Planning - ERP) projeleri; çok sayıda bağımlı faaliyet, belirsiz süre tahminleri ve yüksek maliyet baskısı nedeniyle zaman planlaması açısından önemli riskler barındırmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, bir ERP kurulum projesinde proje süresinin belirsizlik altında tahmini için Monte Carlo simülasyonu ve PERT (Program Evaluation and Review Technique) yöntemleri birlikte kullanılarak olasılık tabanlı bir yaklaşım önerilmektedir. Uygulama kapsamında, ERP kurulumuna ilişkin ayrıntılı iş kırılım yapısı çıkarılmış, her faaliyet için iyimser, kötümser ve en olası süre tahminleri uzman görüşleriyle belirlenmiş ve bu süreler uniform, üçgensel ve normal dağılımlar altında Monte Carlo simülasyonuna tabi tutulmuştur. Simülasyon sonuçlarına göre ortalama proje süresi uniform dağılımda yaklaşık 624 gün, üçgensel dağılımda 614 gün ve normal dağılımda 609 gün olarak elde edilmiş; böylece dağılım varsayımının toplam proje süresi tahminleri üzerinde anlamlı bir etkisi olduğu gösterilmiştir. PERT analizi sonucunda ise projenin beklenen tamamlanma süresi yaklaşık 605 gün olarak hesaplanmış ve %95 güven aralığında proje süresinin 586–624 gün bandında gerçekleşebileceği öngörülmüştür. Faaliyet süreleri farklı dağılımlara göre belirlendiğinde hesaplanan proje süreleri de değişmektedir. Bu durum, ERP proje sürelerini hesaplarken sürelerin dağılımını dikkate almanın önemini vurgulamaktadır.
