A SECTORAL PERSPECTIVE ON CONSERVATORY EDUCATION: THE VIEWS OF BAGLAMA PERFORMERS
Abstract
This study examines the reflections of conservatory education on industry practices and aims to reveal the extent to which the current curriculum contributes to professional competence in the music industry. The study was structured within the framework of the ‘case study’ design, one of the qualitative research methods. The study evaluated the views of bağlama performers who graduated from conservatories and are professionally active in the music industry regarding conservatory education. It identified the problems encountered by graduates during their professional lives and made recommendations for strengthening conservatory education programmes and addressing existing shortcomings. Within the scope of the research, interviews were conducted with 10 bağlama performers who graduated from different conservatories and are actively working in the music industry. The findings show that the participants have at least 10 years of professional experience and that the interest of family members in music is an important determining factor in their orientation towards bağlama and folk music tradition. Participants stated that the areas/courses they believed contributed most to sectoral applications in conservatory education were notation and makam knowledge, THM-TSM repertoire, and instrumental training. However, they noted that within the scope of instrumental training, they mostly accessed study materials from outside sources and through their own efforts. It was emphasised that including courses such as workshops/masterclasses/advanced performance techniques, accompaniment/supporting instruments, music technologies (use of mixers and sound recording software/devices), computer-based notation, and popular music repertoire in the programme, in addition to the current curriculum, would increase alignment with sectoral requirements. Overall, the findings contribute to a better understanding of the shortcomings encountered in conservatory education in practice and provide important data for assessing the alignment of the curriculum with current industry needs. The study reveals the need to strengthen practice-based courses in conservatory education, develop technological equipment capabilities, and increase stage practice-oriented course content.
