Evaluation of Yield and Its Components in Different Peanut Lines and Varieties

Abstract

Peanut breeding is a lengthy process, and existing cultivars in Türkiye fail to fully meet the demands of producers and consumers, necessitating the development of improved varieties. This study aimed to identify superior peanut lines with enhanced pod yield and protein content for use as elite breeding material. The plant material comprised fifteen Indian lines (ICGV 10176, ICGV 10178, ICGV 10179, ICGV 10193, ICGV 10207, ICGV 10208, ICGV 10209, ICGV 10220, ICGV 15074, ICGV 16013, ICGV 16017, ICGV 06040, and ICGV 06099) alongside four cultivars registered in Türkiye (Sultan, Halisbey, BATEM 5025, and NC 7). A two-year field study (2020 and 2021) was conducted in Osmaniye, Türkiye, using a randomized complete block design with three replications. Analysis of variance revealed that the effects of genotypes, years, and their interaction on the investigated parameters were statistically significant (p < 0.05). The line ICGV 10218 produced the highest pod yield (4320 ± 19.39 kg ha⁻¹), while ICGV 10208 exhibited the highest protein content (29.58 ± 0.31%). The findings demonstrate that ICGV 10218 and ICGV 10208 possess highly desirable and complementary traits. Therefore, these lines are recommended as crucial breeding material for developing new, high-performing peanut cultivars to better meet the demands of producers and consumers in Türkiye.
