Effects of a Structured Infection Prevention and Control Training on Dental Students’ Knowledge: A Pre-test/Post-test Study

Öz

Objectives Given the high risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens in dental practice, infection prevention and control (IPC) education is essential. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a structured IPC training on the overall knowledge of third-year dental students transitioning from preclinical education to direct patient care. Material and Methods Third-year dental students were evaluated immediately before and after a standardized IPC training session using an unpaired pretest–posttest design at the cohort level. The training covered standard precautions, hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, vaccination, and transmission-based precautions. A structured questionnaire was utilized to assess demographics, hepatitis B vaccination status, attitudes, and knowledge through an 11-item multiple-choice test. Results Fifty students completed the study. Although 84% of the participants were HBV-vaccinated, only 32% had completed the full three-dose regimen. The educational training significantly improved the mean total knowledge score from 6.46 ± 1.85 to 9.53 ± 1.64 (p < 0.001), with notable gains in bloodborne pathogens (50% to 84%), saliva transmission risk (40% to 88%), Anti-HBs protective level, and PPE donning/doffing sequences (p < 0.01). Attitudes toward IPC practices were generally highly positive regarding hepatitis B vaccination and hand hygiene, however risk perception regarding wearing clinical scrubs in social areas was low. Baseline knowledge positively correlated with attitude scores (r = 0.302. p = 0.035). Conclusion Structured educational training significantly improved the overall IPC knowledge among third-year dental students. These findings highlight the importance of providing regular, targeted IPC training before the clinical transition to ensure patient safety and minimize cross-contamination risks within the dental setting.
