Evaluation of the Morphology of the Sella Turcica in Unilateral and Bilateral Maxillary Transverse Deficiency

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the dimensions and bridging of the sella turcica in individuals with unilateral and bilateral maxillary transverse deficiency during the prepubertal and pubertal growth periods.
Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, 68 patients (28 female, 40 male) who applied for treatment at the orthodontic clinic between 2018 and 2024 and met the specified criteria were included. Patients diagnosed with maxillary transverse deficiency were grouped according to whether this anomaly was unilateral or bilateral, and further subdivided according to their skeletal maturation stages. The size and bridging of the sella turcica were measured on lateral cephalometric radiographs using Image J software.
Results: No statistically significant difference was found in the measurements of calcification, length, width, and height between genders (p>0.05). Additionally, no statistically significant difference was detected in these parameters between the unilateral and bilateral crossbite groups (p>0.05). The width and height measurements of patients in the peak period were found to be significantly higher compared to those in the pre-peak period (p<0.001; p<0.001).
Conclusion: It was concluded that the complex interaction between the dimensions and bridging of the sella turcica and maxillary transverse deficiency cannot be fully explained by morphological measurements alone, and that molecular-level interactions and genetic predispositions should be considered.
