A Study on Engineering Students’ Concept Images: What is a Function?

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify undergraduates’ perceptions towards concept of function by identifying their concept images about functions. To do this, an open ended questionnaire linked to the function concept was applied to 77 first year students at a university during the fall semester of the 2013-2014 academic year. In this paper, only results of the analysis of students’ answers to one question is presented. Answers of students are analyzed with content analysis. According to the answers given by the students, the images they have formed in their minds about the concept of function are collected under 10 different categories. The results of this study revealed that students have some erroneous perceptions about concept of function. In addition, it was seen that students used different metaphors about concept of function such as a machine, a mechanism of operation, a set of rules, a relationship, a matching, an equation etc.  Moreover, they gave several examples from everyday life about this concept. Finally, the conclusions reached in this study were in concordance with the findings of the existing literature.

Mühendislik Öğrencilerinin Kavram İmajları Üzerine Bir Çalışma: Fonksiyon Nedir?

Öz

Bu çalışmanın amacı, lisans öğrencilerinin fonksiyon kavramına yönelik kavram imajlarını belirleyip bu kavrama ilişkin algılarını tespit etmektir. Bunu yapabilmek için, 2013-2014 eğitim-öğretim yılının güz döneminde bir üniversitenin 1. sınıfında öğrenim gören 77 öğrenciye açık uçlu sorulardan oluşan bir yazılı anket uygulanmıştır. Bu makale çerçevesinde konu ile doğrudan ilişkili olan 1 soruya öğrencilerin verdikleri cevapların analizine yer verilmiştir. Öğrenci cevapları içerik analiziyle çözümlenmiştir. Öğrencilerin verdikleri cevaplar doğrultusunda fonksiyon kavramına yönelik zihinlerinde oluşturdukları imajlar 10 farklı kategori altında toplanmıştır. Araştırmanın bulgularına göre, öğrencilerin fonksiyon kavramına yönelik bazı yanlış algılamalarının olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Ayrıca öğrencilerin fonksiyon kavramı için makine, işlem mekanizması, kurallar bütünü, bağıntı, eşleştirme, orantı vs. gibi farklı benzetmeler kullandıkları ve bu kavrama yönelik günlük hayattan çeşitli örnekler verebildikleri görülmüştür.
