An Investigation of Turkish Teachers' Disaster Awareness According to Demographic, Professional, and Personal Variables

Öz

Due to its geographical location, our country is frequently exposed to natural disasters, resulting in significant loss of life and property. Considering the losses caused by the two major earthquakes in Turkey on February 6, 2023, and the anticipated Istanbul (Marmara) earthquake, disaster awareness and education are of critical importance. Teachers are one of the key building blocks in preparing society for disasters. Reducing the potential risks of disasters and designing sustainable educational programs that will increase the disaster resilience of society is possible by increasing the knowledge and awareness levels of teachers. This research was conducted using the relational screening model, a general screening model, which is a quantitative research method, to determine the disaster awareness levels of teachers working in Kocaeli. The sample consisted of teachers working at different school levels, including preschool, primary, secondary, and high school. Data for the study were collected online between January 7, 2025 and February 20, 2025 using the Disaster Awareness Scale (DAS), which had been previously prepared and validated by the researchers. The data were analyzed using SPSS 20.00 software. According to the findings, male teachers had higher disaster awareness than female teachers, awareness was higher for approximately half of the survey items in favor of teachers aged 40 and over, and awareness was higher in favor of preschool and classroom teachers.
