Öz

The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of family belonging in the development of healthy lifestyle behaviours and to examine the mediating effect of self-compassion within this relationship. Ethical approval was obtained from the Trakya University Ethics Committee. Employing a descriptive and cross-sectional design, the study utilized the Family Belonging, Healthy Lifestyle Behaviours, and Self-Compassion Scales. Data were collected online via email from students of Trakya University and analysed using IBM SPSS 22.0 for descriptive statistics. Structural equation modelling was conducted with LISREL 8.80 to test the mediating effect. Results from the measurement model revealed a weak but significant positive relationship between family belonging, healthy lifestyle behaviours, and self-compassion. Additionally, a moderate positive relationship was identified between self-compassion and healthy lifestyle behaviours. Structural model analysis indicated that self-compassion partially mediated the relationship between family belonging and healthy lifestyle behaviours. These findings suggest that enhancing self-compassion may foster healthy lifestyle behaviours even among individuals with low levels of family belonging. However, the study has limitations: It was conducted exclusively online with a student sample, data were obtained through self-report measures, and the sample size was relatively limited. These factors should be taken into consideration when interpreting the results. The fact that the research was conducted exclusively online with students, that the data were collected through self-report scales, and that the study was carried out within a limited timeframe has restricted the generalizability of the findings. It is recommended to prioritize interventions, trainings, and practices aimed at enhancing self-compassion levels in order to promote healthy lifestyle behaviours in individuals.
