Academic Adaptation Processes of Foreign Students Studying at Theology Faculties in Türkiye: The Case of Bolu

Öz

This study aims to examine the academic adaptation processes of foreign students studying at Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal University (BAIBU) Faculty of Theology, one of the theology faculties in Türkiye, some of the basic problems they experience and solution suggestions. It has been understood that the increasing student mobility in higher education institutions with the effect of global development is clearly felt in the faculties of theology along with Türkiye’s strategic and central position in the Islamic world. However, especially the academic adaptation processes of foreign students; It has been observed that they face various serious difficulties in the processes of adaptation to language, culture, pedagogical system and social environment. In this context, semi-structured observation forms, document analysis and thematic analysis methods, which are qualitative research methods, were used. According to the data obtained, it was revealed that students experienced the most problems in their academic adaptation processes such as language deficiency, inability to get used to teaching methods, cultural differences and social isolation. As a result of the study, solutions such as strengthening academic counseling systems, disseminating Turkish support programs and encouraging social activities that will increase cultural interaction were presented.
