Student Perspectives on E-book Use in Open and Distance Learning: A Case Study at Anadolu University Open Education System

Öz

This study examines the use of e-books in open and distance learning environments within the Anadolu University Open Education System. This research adopted a case study approach and collected both qualitative and quantitative data. Data were collected from 1419 volunteer participants via an online form developed by the researchers. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis, while quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and predictive statistics. The study's findings revealed that most participants used e-books in PDF, ePUB, and HTML5 formats on laptops, mobile phones, and desktop computers. Additionally, participants' e-book usage preferences showed a significant difference in terms of gender, though no significant difference was observed in relation to age, degree, or enrolment type. Furthermore, the findings showed that learners used e-book formats due to features such as the ability to search within the book, use it offline, print, use bookmarks, and use links. Participants' opinions on e-book use were grouped under nine themes: digital preference, print preference, limitations, satisfaction, cost, convenience, sensitivity, information, and other reasons. While participants generally preferred e-books due to factors such as accessibility, ease of use, cost, convenience, and environmental sensitivity, the findings also revealed that some participants preferred printed books due to habits, ease of note-taking, health considerations, portability, a lack of knowledge about e-books, and a lack of internet, software, and hardware. The study's findings are discussed, and suggestions for future research are presented.

Açık ve Uzaktan Öğrenmede E-kitapların Kullanımına İlişkin Öğrenci Görüşleri: Anadolu Üniversitesi Açıköğretim Sisteminde Bir Durum Çalışması

Öz

Bu araştırmanın amacı, açık ve uzaktan öğrenme ortamlarında e-kitapların kullanım durumunu Anadolu Üniversitesi Açıköğretim Sistemi bağlamında incelemektir. Durum çalışması yaklaşımı benimsenen bu araştırmada hem nitel hem de nicel veriler toplanmıştır. Araştırma verileri, 1419 gönüllü katılımcıdan, araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen çevrimiçi form aracılığıyla toplanmıştır. Nitel veriler içerik analizi yöntemiyle, nicel veriler ise betimsel ve yordamsal istatistiklerle analiz edilmiştir. Araştırma bulguları, katılımcıların çoğunluğunun PDF, ePUB ve HTML5 formatında sunulan e-kitapları dizüstü bilgisayarlar, mobil cihazlar ve masaüstü bilgisayarlar aracılığıyla kullandıklarını ortaya koymuştur. Ayrıca, katılımcıların e-kitap kullanım tercihleri cinsiyet değişkeni açısından anlamlı bir farklılık gösterirken yaş, öğrenim derecesi, program kayıt türü açısından anlamlı bir farklılık göstermemiştir. Ayrıca her üç e-kitap formatında da öğrenenlerin, kitap içinde arama yapma, çevrimdışı kullanım, yazdırma, yer imi ekleme ve bağlantı kullanımı gibi işlevsel özellikler nedeniyle bu formatları tercih ettikleri görülmüştür. Katılımcıların e-kitap tercihlerine ilişkin görüşleri; dijital tercih, basılı tercih, sınırlılıklar, memnuniyet, maliyet, elverişlilik, duyarlılık, bilgilendirme ve diğer nedenler olmak üzere dokuz tema altında toplanmıştır. Diğer taraftan katılımcılar e-kitapları; erişilebilirlik, kullanım kolaylığı, düşük maliyet, pratiklik ve çevreye duyarlılık gibi etkenler nedeniyle tercih ederken, bazı katılımcıların ise basılı kitapları; alışkanlık, not alma kolaylığı, sağlıkla ilgili kaygılar, taşınabilirlik, e-kitaplara ilişkin bilgi eksikliği, internet bağlantısı ve donanım/yazılım yetersizlikleri gibi nedenlerle tercih ettiği belirlenmiştir. Çalışmanın bulguları doğrultusunda ilgili literatürle karşılaştırmalı bir tartışma yapılmış ve gelecek araştırmalar için öneriler sunulmuştur.
