Looking
at the most important breaking moments from the past 40 years the course of the
Turkey-Syria relations is possible to say that one happened in October of 1998.
Despite the security protocols signed in the first half of the 1990s, Syria
continued to support PKK activities and Abdullah Öcalan's residence in the
Syrian territory brought the two countries to the brink of war in the autumn of
1998. The
ending of the October 1998 Crisis with the signing of the Adana Agreement led
to a gap in the doors of a new era in relations between the two countries.
In
this study, the agent build starring role in PKK activity in Turkey-Syria
relations are analyzed through October 1998 Crisis. The
ending of the October 1998 Crisis with a formal commitment by the Syrian
administration to not support the activities of the PKK has been the starting
point for the transition to a cooperative period of all issues from the
conflict between the two countries. For this reason, it is
possible to consider the October 1998 Crisis as a breaking point.
