The Relationship Between Variations In the Circle of Willis and Multiple Intracerebral Aneurysms

Öz

ABSTRACT Objective To investigate the association between variations in the Circle of Willis (COW) and the prevalence of multiple intracerebral aneurysms. Material and Methods This retrospective study analyzed 1,205 patients who underwent cerebral Computed Tomography Angiography at Akdeniz University between January 2013 and September 2019. We assessed the correlation between COW variations and aneurysm incidence, focusing on demographics and specific anatomical variations. Results The study identified a 21% incidence of intracerebral aneurysms, considerably higher than the typically reported 1-6%. Notably, variations such as anterior cerebral artery A1 segment aplasia were prevalent in patients with aneurysms, particularly older females. A significant association was found between these anatomical variations and the occurrence of multiple aneurysms. Conclusion Variations in the COW are significantly associated with the presence of intracerebral aneurysms. Furthermore, specific types of variation were independently associated with both single and multiple aneurysms. Our findings emphasize the importance of detailed neurovascular imaging in enhancing the detection and management of aneurysms.
