Determination of Information and Opinion of University Students about Transgenic Products (GMO)
Abstract
This study was conducted with the aim of determination of level of information and opinion of students of
Ataturk University, Kazım Karabekir Education Faculty and Science Faculty, Biology and Chemistry departments,
about transgenic products (GMO), in Erzurum province. Scanning model was used in the study. Universe of this
study consists of students from K. Karabekir Education Faculty and Science Faculty, Biology and Chemistry
Departments, through the term 2009-2010. The sample of the study involves 525 students from the above mentioned
departments, in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades. Frequency (f) and percentage (%) values were used for determination of
information and opinion of students about GMO. Students’ answers to GMO questions and opinions were evaluated
with independent group t test for department and major, sex, and faculty variables, while one way ANOVA, Tukey
HSD multiple comparison and Tukey HSD homogenous subsets were used
to compare the answer and opinions for grade level variables. It is tried to determine whether differences between
groups were significant. Results of the studies suggest that (i) students do not have enough knowledge about
transgenic products, (ii) they tend to be dignified about usage of GMO products due to a lack of scientific based
information, and (iii) we need to inform them about GMO products
