Effects of Social and Emotional Learning Skills on Life Satisfaction and Hope
Öz
The aim of this study is to investigate effects of social emotional learning skills on multidimensional
life satisfaction and hope, and to examine whether all differ on gender and grade level. Data were collected through
the Social-Emotional Learning Skills Scale, a demographic data sheet, the Turkish version of Multidimensional
Students’ Life Satisfaction Scale, and Children’s Hope Scale. For this study, 368 6-8th graders attending a primary
school in Güngören, İstanbul, in the 2009-10 academic year were selected by convenience. Data were analyzed by
means of independent-samples t-tests, one-way ANOVAs, Mann-Whitney U and Kruskall-Wallis H tests, and
multiple linear regressions. Social emotional learning skills and multidimensional life satisfaction were found to
differ on gender and grade level while hope only on grade level. Besides, social and emotional learning skills and
self-esteem enhancing skills were found to positively predict life satisfaction while hope was predicted by social and
emotional learning skills.
