Some Criticisms Directed By Mevlana To Sufis In The Mesnevi
Öz
Although nearly eight hundred years have passed since it was written, Rumi's Mesnevi maintains its relevance today with its messages that transcend the ages. Mesnevi, a work written during real life, also deals with many social issues. In addition to the social issues he addressed, Mevlana reflected many segments of society in his works and from time to time used a critical style regarding these segments. One group that received its share of Rumi's criticism was the sufis. As far as can be determined in the work, some of the Sufis were criticized for being dry imitators, some for being careless, and some for being proud and taking on tasks for which they were not qualified. Many couplets also contain expressions reflecting the perspective of the period on sufis. It can be said that Rumi made these criticisms as a great mystic and spiritual guide in order to show his followers the truth. In divan literature, poets have struggled for centuries with the character of the rude bigot, who is far from love, under the name of ascetic. In a sense, the findings in Rumi have prepared the ground for criticism of this typecasting. On the other hand, Rumi also pointed out that we should have the ability to look at everyone critically. This study involved a thorough examination of the Masnavi, extracting relevant stories. Subsequently, the study focused on what Mevlana intended to convey through these metaphors and what he was referring to. In this context, Mevlana sometimes illustrates the deceptive nature of imitation by using the example of a Sufi who, while a guest in a tekke loses himself in the company of dervishes. Of course, all these warnings mentioned in the work, although given directly within the framework of Sufism, are valid for everyone, and everyone can learn a lesson from them.
