Assesment of the Knowledge, Attitudes and Behaviours of Postmenopausal Women About Osteoporosis
Abstract
Objectives: Osteoporosis has become a public health problem that requires pre-cautions due to aging population. Osteoporosis is more common in women and the most common symptoms are bone fractures. It is commonly seen especially in the spine, wrists and hip. Because of the decrease of bone mass in elderly, fractures occur even after mild traumas and the morbidity and mortality rates increase. The aim of our study is to evaluate the knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of postmenopausal women about osteoporosis.
Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 222 postmenopausal women, who were admitted to the Family Medicine clinic and agreed to participate in the study, between January and June 2014. The statistical analysis was performed by using SPSS software (version 17, Chicago, IL, USA), and a level of p <0,05 is accepted statistically significant.
Results: The mean age of the patients was 57,1 ± 10,7 years, mean height was 160,2 ± 6,2 cm, and mean weight was 74,1 ± 13,9 kg; 55,4% of patients (n=123) were light-skinned, 44,6% (n=99) were brunette, 79,3% were married (n=176). The question "Do you know what osteoporosis is?" answered correctly by 74,4% of the housewives, 90% of the civil servants, and the 100% of the pensioners. The differences were statistically significant (p = 0,011). The question "Is osteoporosis a preventable disease?" was answered correctly by 33,3% of the workers, 73,3% of the housewives, and100% of the civil servants and the pensioners (p = 0,001).
Conclusion: Family physicians as continuous caregivers, should inform postmenopausal women about risks and prevention methods of osteoporosis in every visit.
