Family and Kinship Relationships in International Marriages for Migration Purposes: A Study on Turkish-Danish Marriages

Some migrants aiming to relocate to developed countries, particularly European nations, utilize marriage as a means to achieve this goal, opting to marry citizens of these countries. This migration method, referred to as international marriage migration, has recently become one of the most significant and expedient ways to obtain residency in developed countries. The instrumental use of marriage in this manner can complicate family and kinship relationships established through international marriages. In this context, the purpose of this study is to examine the family and kinship relationships in marriages between Turkish men who have migrated to Denmark through international marriage migration by marrying Danish women. In-depth interviews were conducted with a total of 20 participants, comprising 15 male marriage migrants and five Danish women. The analysis of the interviews was performed using the MAXQDA-20 program, with themes and subcategories derived through an inductive method. The findings reveal that factors such as couples living far from their families in Turkey, limited family visits and interactions, and difficulties in accepting both each other and the spouse’s family hinder the development of kinship ties. The results indicate that the vast majority of participants were unable to establish strong kinship relationships with their spouse’s family. While some participants managed to develop partially close relationships with their spouse’s family, no kinship relationships were established between the families of the male and female spouses.
