The Relationship Between Mindfulness and Post-Traumatic Growth: The Mediating Role of Self-Compassion

Mindfulness and self-compassion are two important concepts that are related to each other. Studies showed that they play an important role in coping with stressful situations. However, there is limited information on what role they play in the post-traumatic growth process, which refers to the positive psychological change that individuals experience as a result of struggling with highly stressful life circumstances, often following trauma. In this study, the mediating role of self-compassion in the relationship between mindfulness and post-traumatic growth was examined. The sample of the study consisted of 384 adults between the ages of 18-65 who had a traumatic experience. The data of the study were collected through the Socio-demographic Form, Stressful Life Event List, Post
Traumatic Growth Scale, Mindful Attention Awareness Scale and Self-Compassion Scal. The mediation analysis showed that self-compassion has a full mediating role in the
relationship between mindfulness and post-traumatic growth independent of traumatic event experienced. These findings underscore the value of cultivating cognitive skills, such as mindfulness and self-compassion to facilitate post-traumatic growth in individuals with traumatic experiences, as well as the potential efficacy of mindfulness-based interventions for trauma treatment.
