Associations Between Significance Quest, Demographic Variables, and Adolescents’ Social Media Addiction

Öz

Adolescence is a period of rapid physical growth and complex personality development. As adolescents gradually move away from family influence, they become more open to peer influence. In other words, social relationships play a significant role in adolescents' lives. Today, a considerable part of social relations takes place on social media. This study, motivated by the question of whether adolescents use social media to fulfill a significance quest, aimed to determine the levels of significance quest in adolescents based on certain demographic characteristics and to examine the predictive relationships between significance quest and social media addiction among adolescents. The research was conducted in two phases. First, 257 adolescents were surveyed, and the Significance Quest Scale was adapted for the adolescent sample. The second part analyzed the relationships between variables using data from 607 adolescent participants. t Test, One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Kruskal Wallis H Test and Simple Linear Regression Analysis were used to analyze the data. The study revealed significant differences in the search for significance among adolescents in terms of gender, perceived academic achievement, family income status, parental marital status, and time spent on social media. Additionally, significance quest was found to be an important predictor of adolescents' social media addiction.
