This study examined the suburbanization, which emerged as a result of
rapid urbanization around Antakya, İskenderun-Dörtyol from the aspects of its
development, connections to the city, population movements, urban function and
dispersion of services and settlement morphology.
It was found in the study that suburbs emerged due to the factors such as
population growth, settlement density and dispersion of fields of activity towards
industry and general services. Though administratively separate, they are
functionally dependent on counties of Antakya, İskenderun-Dörtyol. Although they
take on some functions of the counties as a general consequence of the rapid
growth of settlements, they also have features of undeveloped functional land use.
As a natural consequence of all this, planning decisions which do not
correspond to complex relationships between the settlements lie under urban
problems. Therefore, given that the urban development is in progress, it could be
suggested that analyzing the relationships between the settlements is of vital
importance in terms of potential planning for urban areas.
