Determination of Factors Affecting Career Choices of Nursing Students Objective: This study was carried out to determine the factors affecting career choice among the nursing students at Akdeniz University. Method: This descriptive study was carried out with 250 nursing students at Akdeniz University. Data were collected through the use of The Turkish version of HMSÖ, and student’ introduction form was prepared by the researchers. The survey data obtained from the research were analyzed using t test, and frequency and percentage.Results: All of the participants were students from Akdeniz University: 32.4% were first grade students, 61.2% were females, 58.4% prefered to be a nurse as their first choice of career. 67.6% did not have plans to leave nursing education for another career path. Most of the participants, both male and female, don’t think that Nursing is a profession which is respected by all.Conclusion: More than half of the participants prefered to be a nurse as their first choice of career,and they were observed to be highly interested in nursing profession. As a result of the study, it was revealed that the participants satisfied with their choice of the profession

ÖZET

Amaç: Akdeniz Üniversitesi Hemşirelik Yüksekokulu Hemşirelik Bölümü öğrencilerinin meslek seçimini etkileyen faktörlerin belirlenmesi amacıyla yapılmıştır.

Yöntem: Akdeniz Üniversitesi Hemşirelik Yüksekokulu’ndaki 250 hemşirelik öğrencisiyle tanımlayıcı olarak yapılmıştır. Araştırmada veriler, araştırmacı tarafından hazırlanan öğrenci tanıtım formu ve Hemşirelikte Meslek Seçimi Ölçeği  (HMSÖ) kullanılarak toplanmıştır. Elde edilen veriler yüzdelik ve t testi kullanılarak değerlendirilmiştir.

Bulgular: Öğrencilerin %32.4’ünü birinci sınıf, % 61.2’si kız öğrencidir. Öğrencilerin %58.4’ü hemşireliği ilk sırada tercih etmişlerdir. Öğrencilerin % 67.6’sı bölüm değiştirmeyi/yeni bir bölüm okumayı düşünmemektedir. Hemşirelik insanların gözünde saygın bir meslektir” ifadesinin düzeyi her iki cinsiyette de oldukça düşük olarak bulunmuştur.

Sonuç: Öğrencilerin yarıdan fazlası hemşireliği ilk sırada tercih etmiş ve mesleği benimseme durumları oldukça yüksek bulunmuştur. Öğrencilerin mesleğe ilişkin bakış açılarının olumlu olduğu belirlenmiştir.
