Öz

Bu çalışmanın amacı, ilk olarak, yabancı dilde üç farklı kelime öğretim tekniğinin etkinliğini kelime öğrenmeye katkıları açısından ortaya çıkarmak ve ikinci olarak, aralarındaki karşılaştırmalı değerlendirmeyi gözlemlemektir. Bu teknikler kelimenin Türkçe anlamını verme, tasvir kullanma ve kelimeyi cümle içinde kullanmadır.

                Bu teknikler ışığında, amaç yukarda belirtilen tekniklerden hangisinin kelime öğretiminde daha elverişli ve faydalı olduğunu öğretmen ve öğrencilere göstermektir. Bu öğretim tekniklerine göre, hedef öğrencilerin başarı seviyesi üretim ve anlama testlerinden veri elde ederek değerlendirildi. Anlama testi kelime değerlendirmesini çoktan seçmeli testlerde yaparken üretim testleri kelimenin kullanımını boşluk doldurmalı testlerde değerlendirmeyi amaçlamaktadır.

                Çalışmanın sonuçlarını elde etmek için üç tür paradigmatik olmayan test kullanılmıştır. Bunlar Kruskal Wallis test, Mann Whitney U test, and Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test dir. Genel olarak çalışmanın sonucu ele alındığında, sonuç, üç kelime öğretim tekniğinin, Türkçe anlamını verme, tasvir kullanma ve kelimeyi cümle içinde kullanma, öğrencilerin zihinlerinde yabancı dil kelime öğreniminde daha etkili olduğu şeklindedir. Bu yüzden, öğrenciler hedef kelimeleri diğer aktif olmayan öğretim tekniklerinden daha kolaylıkla öğrenebilirler.

                Kısaca, hem üretim hem de anlama testlerinde bütünleşmiş kelime öğretim tekniklerinin kelime öğreniminin daha değerli ve vazgeçilmez bir parçası olduğu söylenebilir. Böylece, bu çalışmanın amacı, bu teknikleri bir arada kullanarak İngilizce hazırlık sınıflarında kelime öğretim şekline net bir cevap aramaya çalıştığı söylenebilir.

The aim of this study is, firstly, to find out the effectiveness of three different vocabulary teaching techniques by means of contributions to vocabulary learning in foreign language and secondly, to observe the comparative evaluation among them. These teaching techniques applied to vocabulary courses are as follows; providing Turkish translation equivalent, using illustrations and using word in context techniques.

In the light of these teaching techniques, the aim is to show the teachers and learners which of the three techniques are more conducive and effective to foreign language vocabulary teaching. According to these teaching techniques, the success level of target students has been evaluated by obtaining data from the production and comprehension test. Production test aims to evaluate the usage of the target words in fill in the blank tests while comprehension makes this evaluation in multiple-choice tests.

Three kinds of non-paradigmatic tests are used to obtain the results of the study. These are the Kruskal Wallis test, the Mann Whitney U test, and the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test. Taking the results of the study into account in general, the conclusion is that three vocabulary teaching techniques,that is, providing Turkish translation equivalent, using illustrations and using word in context techniques are more effective on learning foreign language vocabulary in the mental lexicon of the learners. So, the learners may retain the target words more easily than the other inactive teaching techniques.

In brief, it can be said that integrated vocabulary teaching techniques both in production and comprehension tests are more valuable and indispensable part of vocabulary learning. Thus, the aim of this study can be said to find a concrete answer in the way of vocabulary teaching in the English Preparatory classes by using these techniques together.
