Öz

Harem ve hadımlık, kökenleri çok eskiye dayanan ve birbirinden ayrı düşünülmemesi gereken iki kurumdur. Sanıldığının aksine bu iki müessese, ilk defa yakın dönemde gelişim göstermemiştir. Hatta bu yapıların izlerini MÖ 3. binyıla kadar götürmek dahi mümkündür. Nitekim eskiçağda ortaya çıkan ve yakın geçmişe kadar devam eden bu kültürel mirasın Mezopotamya ve Anadolu’da başladığı doğu toplumları özelindeki yolculuğun belli başlı durakları (Mısır, Çin, Pers, Osmanlı) belirtildiği takdirde, bu iki kurumun nasıl gelişim gösterdiği daha açık bir hal alacaktır. Bu bağlamda harem ve hadımlık müessesesinin kurumsal hafızasını aydınlatmak için öncelikle Mezopotamya ve Anadolu toplumlarında, sonrasında ise yakın dönem toplumlarındaki gelişimine değinmek daha isabetli olacaktır.

The Emergence and Functioning of the Harem and Castration Institution in Ancient Eastern Societies

Öz

The harem and the castration are two institutions that are of immemorial origins and should not be considered separately. Contrary to popular belief, these two institutions have not developed shortly for the first time. It is even possible to trace the traces of these structures back to the 3rd millennium BC. If the main stops of the journey (Egypt, China, Persia, Ottoman) specific to the eastern societies, where this cultural heritage, which emerged in ancient times and continued until the recent past, began in Mesopotamia and Anatolia stated, it will become clearer how these two institutions developed. In this context, to illuminate the institutional memory of the harem and castration institution, it would be more appropriate to mention its development first in Mesopotamian and Anatolian societies, and then in recent societies.
