The Place, Development, and Importance of the Concept of Experiment in the History and Philosophy of Science Based on Robert Boyle’s Approach

Öz

In the context of the history and philosophy of science, the concept of experiment has a central place in the modern scientific period. Questions such as how an experiment should be understood, how it contributes to scientific knowledge, how the experimental process should be carried out, and whether reliable knowledge is reached through induction or deduction have long been discussed. Despite being an influential figure in these discussions, Robert Boyle is a significant thinker who has not received sufficient attention in the literature. Boyle played a decisive role in the development of modern science through his systematic application of the experimental method and defended the necessity of observation and experimental evidence in the production of knowledge. According to him, experiments must be repeatable, orderly, and conducted with a clear purpose. This study aims to make visible the importance of Boyle, especially within the framework of the concept of experiment, for the history and philosophy of science, and to show why researchers in the field should give more attention to this figure.

Robert Boyle’un Yaklaşımından Hareketle Deney Kavramının Bilim Tarihi ve Felsefesindeki Yeri, Gelişimi ve Önemi

Öz

Bilim tarihi ve felsefesi bağlamında modern bilim dönemine bakıldığında deney kavramı merkezî bir yere sahiptir. Deneyin nasıl anlaşılması gerektiği, bilimsel bilgiye nasıl katkı sağladığı, sürecinin nasıl yürütülmesi gerektiği ve tümevarım mı yoksa tümdengelim mi temel alınacağı gibi sorular uzun süredir tartışılmaktadır. Bu tartışmalarda etkili bir isim olmasına rağmen literatürde yeterince öne çıkarılmayan önemli bir düşünür Robert Boyle’dur. Boyle, deneysel yöntemi sistematik biçimde uygulamasıyla modern bilimin gelişiminde belirleyici bir rol oynamış, bilgi üretiminde gözlem ve deneysel kanıtın gerekliliğini savunmuştur. Ona göre deneyler tekrarlanabilir, düzenli ve amaç doğrultusunda yürütülmelidir. Bu çalışma, Boyle’un özellikle deney kavramı çerçevesinde bilim tarihi ve felsefesi için taşıdığı önemi görünür kılmayı ve alan araştırmalarında bu isme daha fazla yer verilmesi gerektiğini göstermeyi amaçlamaktadır.
