Artificial Intelligence Anxiety and Tour Guiding: An Examination of Candidates’ Career Decidedness and Career Expectations

Öz

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence applications in the tourism sector increasingly influences tour guide candidates’ perceptions and expectations regarding their professional futures. This study examines the effect of artificial intelligence anxiety on career decidedness and career expectations among prospective tour guides. Questionnaire data from 177 tourism guiding students at Nevşehir Hacı Bektaş Veli University were analyzed using PLS-SEM. The findings indicate that not all dimensions of AI anxiety are equally influential; in particular, the learning anxiety dimension is decisive. Learning anxiety negatively affects career decidedness and positive career expectations, while increasing negative career expectations. In addition, the sociotechnical blindness dimension was found to reduce career decidedness. In contrast, the job replacement and AI configuration dimensions did not show a significant effect. Overall, the results suggest that strengthening digital skills and AI literacy within tourism education can play an important role in reducing students’ career-related uncertainties. Overall, the results suggest that strengthening digital skills and AI literacy within tourism education can play an important role in reducing students’ career-related uncertainties, while fostering greater adaptability to technological transformation in the profession.
