Analyzing Teachers’ Views on Education and Teaching Process within the Context of “Banking Education”

Öz

The aim of this research is to analyze teachers' views on the education-teaching process and teacher and student roles in the education system within the context of Paulo Freire's concept of banking education. In this qualitative research, the data were obtained by utilizing an individual interview form. The study group of the research consisted of 28 teachers selected using the maximum diversity sampling method among the teachers working at the secondary school level of public educational institutions in Ankara province. The data of the study were collected in 2021 with the semi-structured interview form developed by the researchers in line with expert opinion. The research data were analyzed using the content analysis method. According to the findings of the study, within the context of Freire's concept of banking education, teachers' views on the roles of teachers in the education system have changed relatively, with "directing/mentoring" behaviors coming to the fore. Similarly, participants’ opinions regarding the dimension of student roles inclined to offer that student roles have changed from “object” to “subject”. On the other hand, teachers’ opinions on the dimension of education and teaching processes are that as expressed in the banking education model, the practices of recitation-oriented, rote-learning, and summative assessment continue. It is expected that the results of the study will provide practical ideas to all educational members, especially teachers and school administrators, and contribute to the development and practice of universal education policies.

Eğitim-Öğretim Sürecine İlişkin Öğretmen Görüşlerinin “Bankacı Eğitim” Bağlamında Çözümlenmesi

Öz

Bu araştırmanın amacı, eğitim sistemindeki eğitim-öğretim sürecine, öğretmen ve öğrenci rollerine ilişkin öğretmen görüşlerinin Paulo Freire’nin “bankacı eğitim” betimlemesi bağlamında çözümlenmesidir. Nitel bir araştırma olan bu çalışmada veriler, bireysel görüş formu kullanılarak elde edilmiştir. Araştırmanın çalışma grubu, Ankara’daki devlet okullarının ortaokul düzeyinde görevli öğretmenleri arasından maksimum çeşitlilik örnekleme yöntemi kullanılarak seçilen 28 öğretmenden oluşmaktadır. Araştırmanın verileri, araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen ve uzman görüşü alınarak oluşturulan yarı yapılandırılmış görüş formu ile 2021 yılında toplanmıştır. Araştırma verileri içerik analizi yöntemi kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Araştırma bulgularına göre Freire’nin bankacı eğitim betimlemesi bağlamında, eğitim sistemindeki öğretmen rollerine ilişkin öğretmen görüşleri; görece değişiklik göstererek “rehberlik etme/yol gösterici” davranışların öne çıktığı yönündedir. Benzer bir şekilde katılımcıların öğrenci rolleri boyutuna ilişkin görüşleri, öğrenci rollerinin “nesne” rolünden “özne” rolüne dönüştüğü yönündedir. Buna karşın, öğretmenlerin eğitim öğretim süreçleri boyutuna ilişkin görüşleri, bankacı eğitim modelinde ifade edilen şekilde, anlatım odaklı, ezbere dayalı ve sonuç değerlendirme uygulamalarının devam etmekte olduğu yönündedir. Çalışma sonuçlarının başta öğretmen ve okul yöneticileri olmak üzere tüm eğitim bileşenlerine uygulamaya dönük fikir vermesi, evrensel eğitim politikalarının geliştirilmesine ve pratiğine dönük katkı sunması beklenmektedir.
