Aim: In this study, it was aimed to determine the health literacy level of students aged 60 and over who study in an institution that provides education for lifelong learning in our country.
Materials and Methods: The descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 273 students aged 60 and over in the 2019-2020 academic year. The data were collected by the ‘’Information Form’’ and the‘’ Health Literacy Scale’’. Descriptive statistics, the Mann Whitney U test, and the Kruskal Wallis test were used in analyzing the data.
Results: The mean age of the students participating in the study was 66.71±4.52, 63.7% were female, 62.3% were university graduates, 89.4% were retired, and 70.0% had a medium income. It was determined that the mean total score of the students on the Health Literacy Scale was 113,03±12,24. The scores of females, who perceived their income, health, and nutrition status as good, and those who did regular exercise and knew the concept of health literacy were found to be statistically significantly higher (p<0.05).
Conclusion: In order to achieve the goal of successful aging and to provide quality care in elderly individuals, health literacy status should be evaluated and educational initiatives should be developed accordingly.
