Gender-Based Challenges in the STEM Journey: Social Awareness and Educational Initiatives

Objective: As in many other fields, gender inequality is seen as a remarkable problem that needs to be solved in the field of higher education. In addition to its social impact, it is important to prevent gender inequality in terms of supporting economic development and scientific developments. The aim of this study is to analyze the factors that affect the career planning of female students in the field of graduate education of female students who continue their education in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, in short, STEM. Methods: The data obtained through the questionnaire study applied to female students studying in the field of STEM were analyzed by applying logistic regression and least squares methods. Results: The results show that wage inequality is an important factor that negatively affects graduate career plans. Conclusion: Survey results indicate that job search challenges and the gender wage gap significantly influence STEM female students’ graduate education decisions.

STEM Yolculuğunda Cinsiyetçi Zorluklar: Toplumsal Farkındalık ve Eğitim Girişimleri

Öz

Amaç: Birçok alanda olduğu gibi yüksek öğretim alanında da toplumsal cinsiyet eşitsizliği çözülmesi gereken dikkat çekici bir sorun olarak görülmektedir. Toplumsal etkisinin yanında, iktisadi kalkınma ve bilimsel gelişmelerin desteklenmesi açısından da cinsiyet eşitsizliğinin engellenmesi önem taşımaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı bilim (Science), teknoloji (Technology), mühendislik (Engineering) ve matematik (Mathematics), kısaca STEM olarak ifade edilen alanda eğitimlerini sürdüren kadın öğrencilerin lisansüstü eğitim alanında kariyerler planlamalarını etkileyen unsurların analiz edilmesidir. Yöntemler: STEM alanında eğitim gören kadın öğrencilere uygulanan anket çalışması ile elde edilmiş olan veriler, lojistik regresyon ve en küçük kareler yöntemleri uygulanarak analiz edilmiştir. Bulgular: Elde edilen sonuçlar ücret eşitsizliğinin lisansüstü kariyer planlarını negatif yönde etkileyen önemli bir unsur olduğunu göstermektedir. Sonuç: STEM alanında eğitim gören kadın öğrencilere uygulanmış olan anket çalışmasından elde edilen sonuçlar, katılımcıların iş bulma sürecinde karşılaştıkları olumsuzluklar ile kadın-erkek ücret farklılıklarının lisansüstü eğitim kararlarını etkileyen önemli faktörler arasında yer aldığını göstermektedir.
