Construction of Feminine Identity in Obese Women

Öz

This study investigated the formation of the feminine identity in obese women. The sample consisted of 15voluntary obese women between the ages of 24 and 45. The age range was determined to exclude the effects of puberty and menopause on mental processes. The projective tests were used to examine the obese women’s early relationship with their mothers and their body image issues and to investigate the feminine identifications in obesity. Firstly, semi-structured psychoanalytical pre-interviews were conducted, and after the pre-interviews, the Rorschach Test and the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) were applied. The findings obtained from the projective tests were coded according to the French School coding system and interpreted according to the psychoanalytic theory. The results of the study pointed out that obese women have difficulties in establishing feminine identifications. It has also been found that obese women have problems forming a separate body image from their mothers. It was concluded that obese women cannot attribute feminine sexuality to the body as well. In conclusion, it could also be said that obese women appear to reject the sexualized body and retain the desire to preserve an infantile and desexualized body.

Obez Kadınlarda Kadınsı Özdeşimlerin Projektif Testlerle Değerlendirilmesi

Öz

Obez kadınlarda kadınsı kimliğin kurulmasını araştıran bu çalışma 24-45 yaş aralığındaki gönüllü 15 obez kadının katılımıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Ergenlik süreci ve menopoz sürecinin ruhsal işleyiş üzerindeki etkilerini dışarıda bırakmak adına yaş aralığı 24-45 şeklinde belirlenmiştir. Kadınsı özdeşimleri değerlendirmek amacıyla obez kadınların erken dönem anne ile ilişkileri ve beden tasarımları projektif testler aracılığıyla araştırılmıştır. Katılımcılarla ilk olarak yarı yapılandırılmış ön görüşmeler yapılmış ardından Rorschach Testi ve Tematik Algı Testi (TAT) uygulanmıştır. Projektif testlerden elde edilen bulgular Fransız Okulu kodlama sistemine göre kodlanarak psikanalitik kurama uygun olarak yorumlanmıştır. Çalışmanın sonuçları, obez kadınların kadınsı özdeşimler kurmaktaki güçlüklerine işaret etmiştir. Obez kadınların ele geçiren anne imgesine sahip olmakla birlikte anneden ayrışmış bir beden tasarımı oluşturmaya dair güçlükler yaşadıkları görülmüştür. Annesel işlevin yetersizliği obez kadınların anneden ayrışmış bir beden tasarımı oluşturmalarının önünde engel teşkil etmektedir. Bununla birlikte kadınsı cinselliğin bedene yüklenebilmesinin de mümkün olmadığı sonucuna varılmıştır. Cinselleşmiş beden reddedilmektedir. Obez kadınlar anneden ayrışamadıkları ölçüde çocuksu cinsiyetsiz bedeni koruma arzusunu sürdürmektedir.
