The Haunting of Hill House: Our Fears, Our Loss, and Our Wishes

In this article The Haunting of Hill House Series, which is based on Shirley Jackson's novel with the same name is reviewed. The Haunting of Hill House elaborately explained the trauma and grief a family went through during the difficult process of growing up. The ghosts in the series symbolize life's losses, wishes and fears of sort. The narrative of the series was reviewed via the axes of family representation, the concept of grief, and the process of separation-individuation. In the series, the family is contructed on traditional heteronormative roles and the radical effects of the family on people's lives are exemplified. The symbolism carried by the mother as an object regarding House was also used. The desire of the House and its ghosts is that people never leave; this can be reviewed as a criticism of the family institution. The family represented is more than just a memory, it really is like a ghost that haunts us for a lifetime. While the series deals with the concept of grief, the five siblings in the story represent the five phases of Kübler Ross's theory of grief. It is symbolically conveyed by siblings that the phases are connected; that phases might not progress linearly, and that transitions between phases can occur occasionally. Another point that the series examines is the separation-individuation process. This process is approached from the perspective of the mother. Mothers’s difficulty during this process and resistance to break the symbiotic relationship symbolized via the mother in the narrative.

Tepedeki Ev: Korkularımız, Kayıplarımız ve Keşkelerimiz

Bu makalede, Shirley Jackson'ın aynı adlı romanından uyarlanan The Haunting of Hill House (Tepedeki Ev) dizisi incelenmiştir. Tepedeki Ev, bir ailenin yaşadığı travma ve yasları büyümenin çetin süreci içinde incelikle anlatmıştır. Dizideki hayaletler, yaşamdaki kayıpları, keşkeleri ve irili ufaklı korkuları sembolize eder. Dizinin anlatısı; aile temsili, yas kavramı ve ayrışma-birleşme süreci ekseninde incelenmiştir. Bu anlatı içinde aile; geleneksel heteronormatif roller üzerine kurgulanmıştır ve ailenin insanın hayatında bıraktığı köklü etkiler örneklenmiştir. Ev kurgusunda, bir nesne olarak annenin taşıdığı sembolizmden de faydalanılmıştır. Evin ve içindeki hayaletlerin arzusu, insanların orayı asla terk etmemeleridir; bu aile kurumuna bir eleştiri olarak okunabilir. Tepedeki evin temsil ettiği aile, bir hatıradan öte gerçekten de bir ömür peşimizi bırakmayan bir hayalet gibidir. Dizi, yas kavramını ele alırken yasın beş evresini aktarmıştır ve anlatı içinde hikayedeki beş kardeş, Kübler-Ross’un yas kuramının beş evresini simgelemektedir. Yasın evrelerinin birbirinden kopuk olmadığı ve bu evrelerin doğrusal ilerlemediği, zaman zaman evreler arası geçişler görülebildiği kardeşlerin üzerinden sembolik biçimde aktarılmıştır. Dizinin irdelediği bir diğer nokta ayrışma-bireyleşme sürecidir. Dizinin anlatısı, bu sürece çocukların perspektifinden ziyade annenin gözünden yaklaşmıştır. Bu sürecin anne tarafından zorlukla karşılanması ve annenin simbiyotik ilişkinin kırılmasına direnç göstermesi dizideki anne üzerinden sembolik olarak anlatılmıştır.
