Effect of Calcium and Silicium Applications on Nutrient Content of Tomato Seedlings

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to determine the effects of different doses of calcium (Ca) and silicon (Si) element applications on tomato seedling development and nutrient element uptake Materials and Methods: Tomato seeds of Falcon variety were used in the study. Peat + perlite mixture prepared in 3:1 ratio was filled into vials as seedling growing medium. The seedlings were grown in a climate chamber with a humidity level of 65-70% and photoperiods of 16 hours of light and 8 hours of darkness. The temperature was controlled at 23±2 0C. The study was organized according to the randomized plots experimental design with 3 replications for each treatment and 20 plants in each replicate. Tomato seeds were sown in the same depth in the same compartments with peat + perlite mixture (3:1), one seed in each compartment, and watered with pure water until germination. The seedlings that started to show true leaves were watered with fourteen different nutrient solutions in equal amounts. While N, P, Mg, S, K, Fe, B, Cu and Zn were kept constant in the prepared nutrient solutions, Ca and Si elements were applied at different doses. Results: Wet weights (g) and macro and micronutrient contents of the leaves of the seedlings at planting maturity were determined. As a result of the measurements and analyzes, it was concluded that the seedlings of the 12th, 13th, 14th and 11th treatments were the best quality and most tender seedlings. It is noteworthy that the 13th and 14th treatments were plants to which 200 ppm and 300 ppm of silicon was applied, while the 11th and 12th treatments were plants to which silicon was not added and the two highest doses of calcium were applied. Conclusion: The results obtained indicate that silicon applications at appropriate doses have positive effects on both seedling growth and quality. It is suggested that this important and unique subject in agricultural production should be carried out in other vegetable species.
